Get a Job This Summer at Summer Camps

Summer camp jobs are what movies are made of. However, if you enjoy the great outdoors and working with kids you can find a summer camp job that isn’t exactly Hollywood, but it certainly can make the grade. There are a lot of camps that are searching for counselors, staff for kitchens, staff in training, specialists for activities, groundskeepers and staff for the camp office. There are a variety of different summer camp jobs to be had. Though, taking the right approach for the right job starts with an early approach to linking you with the job you desire.

These are several techniques and tips that can help you land the summer camp job of your choice.

Begin the search early
Although summer is still more than several months away, start your job search early. Summer camps begin to hire their staff early. Additionally, seniority will put some of your competition ahead of you. That does not necessarily mean you wont find a job, but beware of the counselor in line ahead of you. Hiring staff that doesn’t need to be trained and is familiar with the camp and surroundings will put some of your competition ahead of you in the hunt for the summer camp jobs. Don’t fret. There are still plenty of jobs to be had.

Nonetheless, beginning the voyage to summer camp jobs ahead of the pack will give you an edge. If you are starting late there are still some jobs available as late as May or June, but they may not be exactly what you are looking for. Of course, the best positions are taken early the same as any other job opportunity.

Counselors and activity specialists
Summer camps are searching for counselors and activity specialists that have some prior experience. Working with children in jobs that are similar to these two positions will be beneficial when applying for a summer camp job. You can gain some experience with after school programs for children that include planning and executing activities as well as babysitting or day camps for spring break.

Volunteering, coaching little league or dance teams as well as an acting Big Brother or Big Sister will be advantageous to your resume. All of these will qualify as experience in the area that the HR for summer camps are searching for in job candidates.

Teachers and coaches are a way in
Teachers and coaches are the majority of staff found at summer camps. If you have viable friends or family in this field you can certainly ask them for a letter of recommendation or job opportunity information.
Prior summer camps you have attended are a good lead for a job

If you have attended a summer camp as a pre counselor or member ask your old camp for a job. These are great openings for getting your foot in the door and knowing where to look. Some directors feel comfortable about hiring one of their own.

Jobs for teens as summer camps
Summer camps have a lot of jobs for teens. Generally the majority of teen jobs are counselors in training or kitchen staff help.

Consider summer day camps
There are also summer day camps that are place in many metropolitan areas if you don’t happen to be in the position to take a summer camp in the wilderness. These are more than a babysitting position and many people enjoy these as much as spending the entire summer in a cabin.

In conclusion
If you are searching for a specialty position make certain you receive certification or training in these positions. If the camp has a swimming pool or boating as part of the curriculum having a swim certification is a plus. In addition, first aid is always a star on your resume and a good thing to have whenever working with children in any position.

Your resume with a position for summer camp is not any different than any other resume. Make sure to stand out and format it to focus on the job at hand. Don’t do a copy and paste job. Put your best foot forward as you would any other job. Good luck and have all summer working at a summer camp.
