When the atmosphere changes from face to face into a phone to phone meet there are advantages and disadvantages. Most people admit this is more nerve wrecking than an actual sit down request with hiring personnel. Depending on the person there is a possibility it really is the case.

Workers moving along the job search road do admit these are less stressful. Is it the lack of preparation? Not spending two or three hours to physically prepare is a possibility. In fact, an impromptu phone call while sitting around relaxing is certainly something to consider. 

For some individuals not sitting before a panel of folks makes them feel much better. The one on one status does make it more personal and less professional for more than a few.

Disadvantages 

• Make certain a valid phone and phone number are available.

Saying sorry is not what the hiring professional wants to hear to begin this relationship. 

• Put in undivided attention when the time comes

Having a discussion with two different people simultaneously is difficult. Talking to an individual on the phone at the same time as another person in the room is rude. Focus and pay total attention when the time comes.
  
 Call backs are never schedule for a specific time of day. Most circumstances even give a somewhat ambivalent time frame. In the next couple of weeks is a phrase often used. This is a stretch of 14 days. 
 
Never put this person on hold to answer an incoming call unless it is an absolute emergency. Additionally, cutting it short is not a plus. The call is over when the other party hangs up or wraps things up.

• Keep names and companies straight

If out on the prowl for more than one at a time, be careful. Confusing one company with another is easier when looking at a nine or ten digit number versus taking and elevator up in a specific office building.

The advantages and disadvantage listed here are only a few. Generally the personality type is a major factor in thriving for these particular events. In other words, some shine more when there is no face to face discussion. Others see visual body language as a form of input which helps answer questions better. Regardless of how it makes a person feel, the telephone context of interviewing is growing and here to stay.

Whatever the personality, there are some things which are a must have. Put these on the top of the list of things "to do". Always have a professional conversation as if it was a sit down setting. Additionally, keep a professional message on the phone for leaving messages. Although friends and family are calling, so are future employers. How to Answer Why You Left Your Last Job

Of all of the questions asked and answered when looking for a job there is one which seems to cause an enormous pause. Why did you leave your last job? This is a hurdle for a number of different reasons. 

It is a spot where people get stuck and some appear like a deer looking into the oncoming headlights of a car. Being prepared for this is an enormous hurdle and sigh of relief after crossing.

Never let anyone explain there is one simple pat answer to give all employers for any position. It does not play out that smoothly. Some folks will take a position where the repititive actions are boring in a matter of months and are unable to see a future of doing the same thing for years to come.

What a person wants out of a job at 18 changes with time. The same person turns 24 and the entire world changes for them. Priorities or responsibilities are sometimes an enormous influence in most circumstances. Regardless, the shoe fits so wear it.

It is time for a change

This is one reserved for those employees with years of experience in one field or with the company a long time. Typically at the point of becoming vested is when the restlessness begins.

Time for a change after one or two paychecks is going to look awfully silly as an answer for leaving your last job. 

Even staying within the same field after spending at least a year with a company looks okay linked with this answer.

A wonderful example is something along these lines... my last job had walking a minimum of at least 5 miles a day. However, this new position is no working at all. This makes a wonderful fit for me.

  
Believe it or not are some people who enjoy working nights. The  vast majority of people do not. This makes it easy to move from one position on the night shift to an offer of a day shift. Countless parents work a specific shift to coordinate hours with a spouse, daycare or school hours. When these things change it affects the reason a change looks better.

Avoid bad mouthing former coworkers, bosses or companies as a reason for moving to a new position. This comes off extremely negative for the job seeker. That bad thing is basically there is a lot of truth in these statements, but it comes off as winy and labeled under bad attitude.

Drug testing for most business entities is the bare minimum. There are a few substances being screened and lots of legal drugs, such as prescriptions, are revealed as positive for illegal drugs when tested. Over the counter meds like cold and flu remedies are positive. Imagine losing a $50,000 or $60,000 job because of the sniffles. Companies are not doing a very good job vetting out which are legal and which are illegal.

These same hiring entities typically will not take the time to advise the employee they didn't pass the test. The job offer is moved to another applicant. A job seeker will never know the circumstances in most situations. Some will deny you without a chance to offer an explanation for the positive testing outcome. When will businesses spend the money or resources for a better way of separating legal and illegal drugs when testing.

Does it hamper the ability to do the job?

There are some positions where understandably drugs, legal or illegal , will endanger the public. These are positions such as school bus drivers, heavy equipment operators or even pilots to name a few. Judgment, reflexes and response time must not be affected. The difference is life or death in lots of situations. Something as simple as over the counter medication will hurt judgment when using them.

Cold medications are even dangerous depending on the circumstance. However, there are also positions where prescription medications and other legal drugs an applicant uses will not impact their ability to do the job. Dumping trash cans at the local college is not impacted when I take a dose of Nyquil in order to fell better and make it into work the next day.

Does it matter if the landscaper takes anti anxiety meds? It should not, but through drug testing he is positive for an illegal substance and not offered the job.

Invasion of Privacy

More importantly his privacy has been invaded. False positives have been validated with prescription taken for anxiety, ADD and other mental health conditions. With a law in place to avoid anyone accessing any type of medical information about anyone else, how is this act legal?

Costing You More After Hire

Even after invading your privacy and promising not to discriminate against you, it could affect future employment opportunities. Infertility meds in a female employee signals a baby is on the way as soon as possible. Babies mean a maternity leave or even FMLA (Family Leave Act). FMLA promises an employee up to 12 weeks of leave. What if the pregnancy is difficult and leave is taken even earlier? All of these what ifs will cost lots of employees a step up the corporate ladder.

Worse a receptionist has been working in a company for a couple of years and recently started anti depression medications. Drug testing is legal before and during employment. Testing positive will cost her a job after passing the initial test because her medical circumstances changed while working at the company.

In conclusion

Law abiding citizens are needed in every company. When vetting employees for open positions, hiring managers or HR departments are searching for candidates who are not using illegal drugs. Mandatory drug testing is part of nearly every application process. Submitting bodily fluids to the unknown entity you hope will hire you is a necessary part of getting a job in todays market.

This being said, the business asking for the sample has some responsibility when vetting out unwanted workers. One of the biggest is putting a plan in place to separate legal from illegal along with keeping medical info private and not part of internal hiring. Medical info privacy is not only important, but it is a law. How to resolve this issue is a very sticky situation. Additionally, a plan in place to answer or request a review of a positive test is necessary.

Drug testing is right for all sorts of reasons. It has been in place for several decades and works in most cases. Though, a blanket immunity for a company to use drug testing is a license to steal.
